Boschendal Wines

Hosted by South African presenter, producer, actress and entrepreneur Carol Bouwer, African Odyssey has developed into a premium showcase of African excellence. In only its second year, the event has garnered the participation of key international talents, featuring costume designer June Ambrose in 2017, and former GQ publisher Louis Orlianges in 2018.

Last year was particularly special as Boschendal – in our support for African progress – was an official collaborator to the event. Our own Shirley Van Wyk joined a panel of esteemed guests to discuss the future of the African luxury space.

“Africa is rich in culture and unique in more ways than one. The impact African design and society has had on international trends is irrefutable. Through remaining true to our traditions, our influence on global society will continue to grow,“ says Shirley.

The 2018 event featured a number of esteemed guests such as radio host DJ Fresh, media personality Nomzamo Mbatha, Chef Coco Reinarhz and UNICEF South Africa Representative Sanjay Wijesekera. All guests were treated to Boschendal’s most premium selection of wines, including the award-winning Jean Le Long, Elgin Chardonnay and Heritage collection.

“The African Odyssey has been a journey of kindred spirits coming together with the stated intention to empower young women in business. What many of us did not envisage was how empowering it would be for us individually as well! As a convenor, I create these platforms hoping I can transform one life but never do I imagine my own being transformed by the presence of each individual in the room. Each participant came ready to learn and teach. Each sponsor came with the intent to ensure they are working in a country that invests in its people and where growth is shared, and for me as a big fan of Boschendal Wines it was a privilege to experience the spirit behind the wines.” says event host Carol Bouwer.

She continues saying “Shirley was not only professional and knowledgeable but she spoke purpose into the lives of all in the room. It was enriching to see how she was intent to build a network of sisterhood that will reach well beyond the attendants on the day. If a partnership is imbued with meaning the impact is felt throughout the community and that is an odyssey- a journey for all. I remain deeply humbled by this partnership and look forward to doing more together. Thank you to absolutely everyone and kudos to master who created that Brut- I used to think I was a French girl but it’s now MCC for me.”

Motivated by creating a movement of change in the luxury industry, African Odyssey is set to grow from strength to strength in coming years. We are excited to see this excellent platform continue to take shape.
