Jacques Viljoen is Boschendal’s prestigious Cellar Master who joined the team in 2018, bringing with him a wealth of wine-making experience and deep passion for the art. A regular awards recipient at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) and Decanter Awards, Jacques most recently won Gold for his Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz at the IWSC – but he has also been awarded for almost every varietal he has produced before.
With 16 years of experience as winemaker at Zevenwacht, he is an expert in staying true to terroir and the fruit to produce award-winning vintages. His style merges classic and modern techniques that reference his time in France, working with acclaimed French winemakers.
Before France, Jacques studied winemaking at Stellenbosch University, following which he had his first official appointment at Die Bergkelder. He joined Zevenwacht in 2002 and took over the role of head winemaker in 2005. His career has been exceptional but no surprise to his family and friends. With his father’s side of the family in the wine business, Jacques first knew he wanted to be a winemaker when he was in nursery school.
When he’s not working on gold and four-star-winning wines in the prestigious Platter guide, Jacques can be on his bike, enjoying the ample cycling routes traversing our estate.
