Richard Duckitt, Boschendal red winemaker
Richard Duckitt, dedicated young red winemaker at Boschendal, grew up on a farm in the Darling District of South Africa and applies his inherent knowledge of terroir and produce to his daily winemaking practice. Having completed a Diploma in Viticulture and Cellar Technology at the Elsenburg Agricultural College of Stellenbosch, Richard channelled his solid agricultural understanding and winemaking ambition into his budding career.
Richard began his journey as a winemaker in Stellenbosch and went on to reap valuable experience during the completion of two harvests in California and one in Bordeaux. He acquired a taste for excellence and fervour for the scientific and creative processes throughout his 9 vintage experiences at Franschhoek Vineyards. Having joined the Douglas Green family in 2008 his natural love for tasting and creating led to his appointment as devoted red winemaker at Boschendal Estate in May 2015.
Passionate about experimentation, Richard endeavours to blend the Boschendal team’s fresh modern approach to best practice and South Africa’s most noble grape varieties into premium wines of consistent quality.
After a busy day in the cellar and in the vineyards where he is encouraged to creatively explore trends and balance these with traditional winemaking techniques, Richard extends his love for experimentation to his private kitchen where he enjoys cooking to impress his wife with innovative dishes.
Lizelle Gerber, Boschendal MCC and white winemaker
Lizelle Gerber, dedicated Méthode Cap Classique and white winemaker at Boschendal, is an innovator whose passion, drive for perfection and respect for the grape have resulted in an abundance of award-winning wines. Having completed a Winemaker Degree at the Elsenburg Agricultural College of Stellenbosch, Lizelle combined the tenacity of her military experience and her innate love of the vine to carve a name for herself in the industry.
Lizelle began her career in 1996 at Zevenwacht Estate and spent a harvest in the Alsace region of France. It was during her tenure at Avontuur Estate in 2000 that Lizelle began to reap the fruits of her labour. Lizelle joined DGB as Bellingham winemaker in 2004 before her appointment at Boschendal in August 2006.
Passionate about learning something new each day and anticipating regional nuances, Lizelle strives to translate some of the world’s most noble grape varieties and their delicate fruit expressions into her wines. Lizelle has her finger on the pulse of innovative winemaking techniques and is encouraged to experiment creatively while balancing tradition to produce premium wines of modern sophistication.
Lizelle also endeavours to cater to modern audiences, diverse wine palates and to educate younger audiences. Spending time at home experimenting with clean cooking and wine pairing or designing garden landscapes while listening to Vangelis ambient orchestral tunes are Lizelle’s favourite ways to relax after a busy day in the cellar and vineyards.
Stephan Joubert, Boschendal viticulturist
Stephan Joubert, dedicated viticulturist at Boschendal, whose passionate ‘Vine to Wine’ approach places him firmly at the root of the winemaking process, prides himself on supplying the winemaking team with grapes of exceptional quality. Having completed a BSC Agriculture in Winemaking and Viticulture before completing his Honours in Viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, Stephan applies his knowledge to the complete winemaking process, spending time both in the vineyards and in the cellar as well as a judge at various local wine competitions.
Stephan manages all grower relations and grape buying throughout the Western Cape and harvests the fruit of his labour by overseeing all logistics of grape intake, tasting each block before harvest to ensure that grapes are picked at optimum ripeness.
Passionate about understanding the diverse terroir influences, Stephan enjoys savouring an excellent glass of wine with his wife outdoors in full knowledge of its ethical source, while enjoying the company of his two children.
Having joined the Boschendal team in 2006, Stephan revels in the challenge of sourcing the noblest grape varieties from the best vineyards South Africa has to offer.
